English Language Arts
You will be amazed at the growth your child will make in reading this year! We incorporate many forms of reading each day. We do modeled, shared, guided, independent, and collaborative reading based on The Daily 5 model to help your child become a more proficient reader. Within this model, we provide opportunities to practice phonics and phonemic awareness, word recognition, vocabulary development, comprehension, and fluency. So many things to learn!
Your child is at a critical point in their development as a reader and you play a key role in that development. If your child sees you enjoying reading, he/she is more likely to want to read. Please be sure your child reads nightly and talks to you about the books they read.

We write about many things in first grade. We write stories, journals, poems, lists, and recipes. We write fiction and non-fiction. We write about math, science, and social studies. We write every day! You will see your child pass through a few different stages of writing this year. They may begin the year writing mostly consonants to represent their words and this writing may be challenging for you to read. Eventually they will progress to writing words using a variety of correct spelling patterns and include proper punctuation and capitalization in their written work.

MATH
This we will teach math using primarily The WCPSS standards aligned lessons. We are excited to support your first grader's foundations in numeration, measurement, geometry, data collection and analysis, and algebra that they will need to be a successful math student. Your child will have many opportunities to choose and practice strategies that engage them and help them understand and explain their own mathmatical thinking.
SCIENCEIn Science this year your child will learn about the needs of plants and animals, the properties of solid Earth materials, the differences in the day and night sky, and build an understanding of balance and motion.
